Unpacking Mars and Venus: Sex & Gender in the Natal Chart

  • Portland School of Astrology 3939 Northeast Hancock Street Portland, OR, 97212 United States (map)

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, right? Wrong! All humans have the potential to embrace feminine and masculine traits, as well as the space between and beyond. At a time when non-binary gender expression and fluid sexuality are increasingly visible and socially acceptable as part of our human experience, the field of astrology is ready to stop assigning gender to planets.

This class is for everyone: astro newbies and professional astrologers alike will be challenged to expand their sex/gender vocabulary and discover nuance in the male/female or masculine/feminine binary. As a group, we will first define biological sex, gender identity/expression, and sexual orientation as they operate in present day American culture. Next we will use these definitions to explore themes in the natal chart. Focusing primarily on Venus and Mars placements, we will work as a group to tease out sexism and gender stereotypes from the tool of astrology. Natal chart examples will be discussed as a group, and attendees will have the opportunity to examine their own natal Venus and Mars placement to better understand the complexity these planets can lend to our multifaceted identities. Bring your thoughts and questions, and be prepared for a lively discussion.
